I already have a number of level/grade 1 piano books. All attempting to help you progress from your feable first effort to a relatively high standard. Grade 1 is a lot harder than I thought it would be and it’s no mean feat to complete this first level. Remember, many people may have started from not playing at all, that’s why you need all the help you can get.

I have to start by saying that this book is superb. It combines theory, practice exercises and short solo pieces all in one book. I know that many piano courses claim to do it all, but this book progresses at a comfortable pace and really does seem to cover everything you need know as a novice pianist. Most of the other courses I have been working through just don’t give you the vast amount of practice exercises and in-depth theory that this one does. Often I’ve found that in other books it’s all going swingingly then all of a sudden there seems to be a massive jump in the level which always leaves me struggling to progress further. This book doesn’t rush at all and makes sure that each aspect is covered extensively. If you look at the exercises/pieces at the end of the book, they don’t seem as impossibly complex as the sort of exercises that you see in other books. Some may find that this books progresses too slowly for them but I absolutely love the relaxed pace as it always feels as if you’re progressing without having huge hurdles in the way. As this is the first and only book in the Alfred’s piano course that I own (so far) it seems that the basic course is spread across a number of books, 3 by the looks of it. I shall be buying more, in fact the level 2 book is on my wish list.

Two other points to mention are firstly the notes aren’t called by the names we tend to use e.g. quaver, crotchet, etc but I think it must be the American way of calling them eighth notes or quarter notes, etc. Also the loose binding of the book is a God send. It means that you can open it at a page and it stays there! There a number of books that don’t use this binding method and it is incredibly annoying.

Out of all the books I’ve seen this is the one I would recommend above all others.

I recently brought a digital piano and my partner decided he’d like to learn (having given up as a child – and many years ago that was!). So after a prolonged search on the internet for lesson material and the expenditure of a not inconsiderable sum we finally came to Alfred. I will say at this stage that though I was willing to help out, in no way was I going to be “teacher”, if for no other reason than to preserve a harmonious household atmosphere! So let me cut to the chase, Don’t spend a fortune on internet courses, this is not the place to go into details but in general they have many drawbacks and are not worth the money. So what about Alfred? Light on theory, heavy on sound practical lessons. The lessons are designed for the learner to make rapid progress in a logical fashion. It is basically “chord” piano – and if all you want to do is to play songs, blues, bit of rock and so on than there is nothing wrong with that. What impressed both of us is the speed of progression and the satisfaction felt (he says) at the end of every lesson. Other books will help and give some useful tips but if you are an adult learner make Alfred your first buy, you won’t be disappointed. And to answer the perennial question – “Do you need a teacher?” Only if you are a child or aspire to be a concert pianist! Otherwise, if you are reasonably intelligent, can waggle your fingers independently, then definitely not!

Absolutely great book for a total beginner. My evening class teacher told us to get this and i can see why. It gets you reading music and gets you playing songs, this is one of my favourite tutorial books.
